BEAUTY IS HAND MADE
Experience a legacy of excellence with Fleming & Howland. Furniture makers since 1780.
MADE IN ENGLAND
“Every great design begins with an even better story.”
The origins of Fleming & Howland began in 1780 when the shoemaker and cordwainer Solomon Howland turned his hand to the craft of chair making. The Howlands remained self-employed craftsmen until 3rd generation George Howland started a small workshop ’employing 2 men’ (1881 census).
THE ICONIC CHESTERFIELD
Fleming & Howland are the creators of the world’s best-known British sofa and chair design, the iconic Chesterfield. This highly distinctive visual design has been preserved using the same techniques since its origins over two centuries ago.
COLOUR
For us colour is both a science and an art. It is modern and traditional. It is bold and discreet. For us colour is contrast and monochrome. It is dyes and pigments. Colour is our passion. Colour is hand made.
ANATOMY
Over 1000 components are individually tapped, fixed and screwed into the frame. Some for structural purpose, some for the delicate finishing touches. An attention to detail you simply don’t find anywhere else..
ECOSYSTEM
The very nature of hand-made furniture means it has a much lower impact on carbon emissions compared to your average large industrial counterpart. The only ‘power tool’ a Fleming & Howland craftsman will use is, quite literally, his hands. In addition, 90% of the raw materials required to produce a Fleming & Howland is locally sourced and so there is always minimal wasted energy through transportation.
Woven from natural yarns with a 50% linen, 50% cotton composition. Durable, strong, smooth and cool to the touch.
Cotton velvets are the most elegant and luxurious of fabrics.
Beautifully soft, 100% wool is naturally soil, stain and flame resistant.
The real beauty of making furniture by hand is the ability to customise.
