The hide is pre-dyed before arriving at the workshop and subsequently antiqued by gently rubbing away the top coat. A final sealant is then applied to ensure protection, also providing a mellow lustre finish. The surface of antiqued leather used on chesterfield sofas is enhanced by the application of a contrasting top coat which can be partially removed (‘antiqued’) to reveal the underlying colour. This technique relies on a fine top layer, which will be subject to colour change with age and use. Some natural scarring and blemishes will be visible.
